The Minaal founders approached me, having been referred by a local manufacturer. After a couple of in-person meetings and a loose brief, I was able to develop concept drawings and a sewn mock-up sample for what would later become their iconic Carry-on Pack. After deciding New Zealand manufacturing wasn’t going to work for them, Doug and Jimmy approached one of the biggest Pack and Bag factories in Vietnam and were able to convince them of their future potential.

While they were on the ground in Vietnam, we were able to continue to develop the design together, and from New Zealand, I ensured that every detail and iteration was captured in detailed tech packs. Once the design was resolved, they embarked on a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign. After the successful launch of that first pack in 2013, we continued development, expanding the range to include several Packs, a range of accessories and many different add-ons. The original Carry-on is now up to version 3.0, with a 4.0 currently in the works.
